What Next?

With Gun Monkeys out and done and theoretically self-sustaining, it’s time to look at what’s next for Size Five.

Firstly, it goes without saying I’ll be continuing to support Gun Monkeys. There’s a patch incoming for a few minor bugs and what-have-you. But outside of all that it’s time to think about The Next Game.

I love The Swindle. I’m a big fan of the concept (though I now worry some of its core mechanics have been done better). It’s a great game, but it’s a fucking complicated beast, and I’m simply not sure I can afford to make it the game it deserves to be right now.

Looking at it with fresh eyes, several elements didn’t work, lots of bits need a huge rewrite, and because of its open-ended structure it’d need months and months of beta testing alone to make sure it’s balanced. Coming back to it after a few months off, I can see what needs addressing, and the bad news is I can’t reeeally afford it, especially if it doesn’t turn out to be a big seller. If it didn’t sell astonishingly well, it’d be the end of Size Five, and that’s just far too many eggs to put in a single basket.

I certainly don’t want to make it and have it sub-par because I can’t afford to make it properly. That’d be awful.

Nope, after a lot of metaphorical wrestling, it simply can’t be the game I’m going to make next.

So right now I’m in limbo. Kind of kicking around, poking at ideas with sticks. I’m prototyping some new stuff. Something that’s a bit more A-to-B than The Swindle, something a bit more story-based.

I’m pleased with the plot and the structure, and there are some really interesting and unique mechanics to it… It’s looking pretty good, and crucially it’s a much more manageable project.

Details soon, hopefully.

Keep up man ! We’ll support you to the end (may it never come) !

  2. Sep 92013

Have you considered crowd-funding The Swindle? I’m sure you have but just curious what led to that not being a potentially viable option? Looking forward to hearing what the new ideas are though.

All the luck you can get with the next project, hopefully this one will be on Linux.

re crowdfunding: It’s not for me just yet. I don’t *need* the cash, so until that wolf’s at the door I’d rather not be answering to others.

re crowdfunding: Makes great sense, thanks for the response. You’re very fortunate to be in a position to be able to make that kind of decision. Truly independent development is always the best. Again, excited to hear what your plans are for the future.

Make us a new Ben & Dan adventure and we’ll happily buy it and enjoy a new episode while bringing our support.
