General Discussion / Re: Bond James Bond License to Kill Thread
« on: November 06, 2012, 05:55:26 pm »
The first half was a lot of fun. And I loved little things about the film. Like...
This.
But the plot was incredibly stupid. By the end it seemed only 5-6 of all MI6 emploeyees are capable of doing anything of value, leading to Bond having to face armies of goons alone. Alone but with a trusty Albert Finney character appearing out of nowhere for the final deathmatch. That overlong climax at the Skyfall mansion disappointed me the most. Felt very artificial, video game like, and was all about guns.
The last scene was excellent, love that it's cyclical

« on: November 06, 2012, 05:32:02 pm »I totally agree. Also is it just me or do the effects in general look more fake/cartoony? Not just Gollum, although he is part of it.
There is something fishy going on. Lighting looks flat and painted. In the Shire scenes the dwarfs keep feel superimposed over Gandalf in photoshop rather than filmed together with him.
But I like this new Bilbo. Even though he seems quite a different character than the one in the book. Always an adventurer at heart this one.

Yes, Shadow of a Doubt is great, with that whole beloved - but secretly serial killer - uncle angle, and I'm always surprised why is it so rarely mentioned. Especially as it's supposedly Hitchcock's own favorite.
I also really like some of his British oldies - like The Man Who Knew Too Much or 39 Steps. Somewhat different feel to them than to the post-war Hitchcock.
Never seen rope. Will have to check that one out.

I'm really curious what will be Tim's reactions to those awful puzzles with plane controls at the very end. Those always seemed to me to be a rushed, last minute design.

If you already like it I can only recommend you keep at it till the end, even if it slows down for a while.

Did I? I remember that very differently. Regardless, I can see the topic wasn't brought up in your conversation with them anyway.

« on: September 21, 2012, 08:08:31 pm »Which one? All I can find is the one that says it's an "adventure game of running/ jumping racing against the clock", which when combined with the visuals on screen at that point leaves very little to suggest it's a point and click game.
Yeah, but it was enough to grab my attention and get me started searching for adventure game elements info for a while.
Ron Gilbert's The Cave also has running and jumping, but supposedly it's still mostly an adventure game.
In fact I really enjoy a hybrid once in a while.

« on: September 20, 2012, 07:35:26 pm »Did they ever actually say it was an adventure game, or just that it was an adventure?
Visually it looks like one, admittedly, but that's not really their fault.
Their kickstarter video narrator said it was an adventure game in classic style.

« on: September 20, 2012, 05:28:34 pm »I can confirm that the The Other Brothers guys are lovely and friendly and funny and deserve to do really well.
One thing that I've been really curious about for a while - do they really think The Other Brothers is an adventure game or was it just a marketing slogan???

The new trailer has some nice acting, but looks even more TV. :( Especially the interiors.
It also has hedgehog torturing.

Glad to hear I wasn't alone not being able to get into Shank. Ninja stealth missions already sound like a better game material than what Shank was supposed to be.

General Discussion / Re: Robocop
« on: September 16, 2012, 09:31:10 pm »Ha ha, I know what you mean. But it's what makes Robocop so cool and existentially unnerving for me, though, when he unscrews his helmet and you see the amazing Rob Bottin make-up which shows his face is just stretched over a robotic head
Yeah, that's the kind of feelings I remember getting from Robocop as a kid too. Some other things that I remember being existentially unnerving back then were Nicholson's Joker and quite a few things in Howard the Duck.

Down here lawyers are pretty useless - each one with quite a different opinion on how the law works. They're just a necessary evil for whenever you get sued, but I definitely wouldn't trust one with a contract.

I agree 100$ is pretty steep and it doesn't work perfectly as a filter, but at least it's a one time payment and you are told exactly where it goes. Also, it's all about making a deal with a store, so it doesn't surprise me that Valve doesn't really care too much about studios that can't afford to risk such a sum - the chance of getting decent sales off their games is minimal. As much I'd hate to pay, I can't feel bad about Valve not being more charitable and innovative here.
Now, the 100$ per game fees to enter indie games competitions is on the surface a similar idea, but actually the real problem IMO. It's at non-business focused events, where I think indies who can barely afford any fees of this nature should be better supported by the community.
What a great noir monologue this would make.

Money is the one substance all but guaranteed to defy the accepted laws of science. It flows uphill and does not diffuse to regions of lower concentration.
It also invariably turns any discussion rancid and out of balance the minute it enters play. There are perfectly valid points on either side of this particular discussion of money but the whole discussion still stinks like the storage freezer I turned off by accident before leaving town for three weeks.

Seems like the game itself will be pretty great too, but I just love Tim's announcement of it:
