General Discussion / Middle Manager of Justice

Seems like the game itself will be pretty great too, but I just love Tim's announcement of it:

I'm liking this one more and more with each new trailer:

It's a new stopmotion project of the Coraline animation team, and it has a strong Monster Squad vibe.

General Discussion / Permanence of death in a game of dying minds
« on: April 07, 2012, 08:17:51 pm »
I hope the topic of death in games (that Dan was interested in) isn't completely irrelevant by now. Because I'm looking for suggestions for my own creation. And it's about the implementation of death in an adventure game, so it's not something to be taken lightly.
The situation looks like this. I've been long working on this experimental, turn-based adventure game where you can freely look inside the main character's head, where you can move and combine his most persistent thoughts and obsessions. The character is quite ill though, and after a certain number of moves parts of his brain die. However, if you act properly, you can barrier some parts of the brain away from the rot - at least delay it somewhat. Ultimately you need to discover some way to avoid turning into a total zombie.
The game is designed in such a way that the player should die - many times and quite often. Every such "fatal" game session is considerably different depending on the thoughts you save for the final moments. That's why the game is called "The Thought Saved for Last". But still, I don't want to frustrate and confine the player too much. I was thinking about leaving the possibility to go back in time a few turns (Toki Tori style). But I'm not sure if that would feel right in a game where you want to create the feel of inevitable, approaching fate.
What do you think about this issue? I made this into a poll, but I'll be also most grateful for completely new ideas, how to deal with this design problem.
The following brain screengrab is a WIP in every way:

General Discussion / Pizza vs. Skeletons

And I thought we were running out of eye-catching "VS." concepts. Looks like this might be something quite cool:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=byLbfIvZVDI
Somewhat similar to Rock of Ages I guess, but in 2D with more variety and more "traditional" platforming. Also, awakens my deeply buried childhood obsession about skulls and skeletons - great feeling.

Anyone played this one yet?
http://www.walkthruwalls.com/
I'm trying to get through the pile of games for the AGS Awards 2011 first. Oh wait, this one came out in December, so it qualifies.
From what I've seen do far, looks somewhat TGP inspired (well, maybe I actually didn't see that, but read in an interview).
Anyway, Adventure Gamers say it might be in their next Top 100 Adventure Games round-up. Must be pretty good then.

General Discussion / AdventureX 2011 talks
« on: January 10, 2012, 08:23:54 pm »
I thought I'll link to the recent AdventureX talks - they should be of interest to the point & clicking fans here.
Here's Chris Jones (creator of Adventure Game Studio) talking about the... history of Adventure Game Studio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20pYaVjAV98
btw that person in the audience with the long red hair is the author of Nelly Cootalot
Next is Yahtzee and his take on the... history of adventure games genre:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpNSlzk80HY
And here are some design tips from Chris Bateman - one of the leads on the Discworld adventure games (maybe the full talk will be posted later):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9x4oFKI24Q
There's supposedly a video about Nelly Cootalot 2 coming soon as well.
EDIT: And here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2KlPRIB7WI

General Discussion / Steam Halloween Sale
« on: October 27, 2011, 08:04:52 pm »
It's happening: http://store.steampowered.com/sale/scary_sale_2011
I'm wondering about Ghostbusters - did anyone here play it? Is it worth getting?
Also, does Bioshock 2 offer anything really new or cool compared to the original, or is it more like an additional collection of missions?
Anything from the lesser known titles that's unfairly overlooked?

General Discussion / Ironclad - some kind of film with swords and battles
« on: June 03, 2011, 12:57:48 am »
Anyone else interested in and waiting for this one?
http://www.hd-trailers.net/movie/ironclad/
Has lots of actors I really like. James Purefoy in the main role, Paul Giamatti as the main antagonist, Brian Cox, Derek Jacobi, Mackenzie Crook. + it's all middle ages and sword-fights without excessive CGI. Seems like it could be really fun.

Just got through the part where everything explodes. Great, classic adventure gaming so far.

So what did everyone think of this Gervais/Merchant last film? I really liked it. A warm 90 minutes (fairy) tale about following your dreams with some really nice and well-acted characters. Rather straightforward really. I'd even say as unpretentious as a movie can get.

General Discussion / Gemini Rue
« on: February 28, 2011, 05:38:58 pm »
Anyone playing it?
I'm not sure if it'll beat Heavy Rain in popularity, but it's a heavy rain noir in a proper adventure game and not a bunch of quick time events. And it's getting incredibly great press and player reactions:

The Dan and Ben Adventures / Nazi Dinosaur Army: The Game
« on: February 22, 2011, 10:17:20 pm »
Now that's some really cool idea they came up with for this game.
From the website:
"Adolf Hitler has succeeded in resurrecting dinosaurs. The reptilian horde has trampled Europe and the Mediterranean. Can nothing stop the Nazi’s dinosaur army?
Dino D-Day is a frantic, action-packed multiplayer game that will transport you to a World War II that should have been. You and your friends will battle online choosing to serve the cause of the Allied nations or Adolf Hitler. The Allied side includes six playable characters each with unique weapons and abilities to use in combat. Mow down a Dilophosaur with your trusty gargoyle on a skateboard, blast a kamikaze pterosaur out of the sky with your Hitler laser beams, toss out a horseshoe magnet to lure a raptor into a trap."

Supposedly everyone knows about this by now (I've found it via RPS), but just in case:

A wonderful piece of expressive voice acting that is a speech about the quality of a certain well-known RPG.
